Daisy Hill Hospital - Paediatrics, Newry

Daisy Hill Hospital provides key acute services for the Southern Health Trust region in Northern Ireland and these were significantly enhanced with a multi-million-pound investment for children and young people which served to create a new Paediatric Centre of Excellence at the hospital. The £8.4 million development saw major refurbishment works on the existing sixth floor to turn this into a state of the art paediatrics ward with dedicated Paediatric Theatre and all associated suites.

The new Paediatric Centre of Excellence officially opened in November 2017 following the full strip out and refurbishment of the 6th floor to make way for a new child-friendly theatre suite and recovery area, as well as a 20 bed children’s ward and a dedicated area for paediatric outpatients and ambulatory care – all custom designed to support the delivery of the most up to date clinical standards for the treatment and care of children and young people. The project which was undertaken in two phases over an 85-week period, also involved significant restructuring on lower floors to accommodate all associated mechanical and electrical services, infrastructure works and to provide temporary accommodation for hospital staff while the main building works were completed.

KEY FEATURES

Programme and quality were achieved throughout the project and influenced by the following factors:

  • The project involved works in a live, critical environment where uninterrupted continuity of services was fundamental. Phase 1 was planned to pave the way for the main phase 2 works (construction of the new 24 Bed Paediatric Unit and Theatre Suite) and entailed decant and relocation of administrative, support, medical staff and patients. In total there were 62 separate decants with works undertaken to 38 individual rooms and locations and varying from minor redecoration to entire strip out and refurbishment of existing spaces in preparation for the purposed change of use. The duration of the specific activities varied from 1 day to 16 weeks.
  • Before any works could commence, the termination of all existing electrical and mechanical installations serving level 6 (and other floors below) had to be undertaken and services then diverted. This effectively involved a separate mechanical and electrical enabling contract with highly complex diversion of all services from the retained roof plantroom.
  • Effective delivery of services at 6 storeys was achieved by careful sequencing of works e.g. full deconstruction of 6th floor, removal and replacement of existing windows, demolition of over 750sq/m of existing concrete frame and roof structure, strengthening of the existing RC frame, erection of 140t of steel to form new roof plantroom and roof structure and then final installation of new brickwork envelope, cladding and associated roof finishes.
  • Our experience in micro planning works down to 1-day activities with 80% of activities on the critical path ensured the programme was maintained.
